John Carter of Mars

John Carter Movie Poster
Hya people of the blog and internet world! It's me... Ironwill. Back to tell you more news and reviews of my awesome movie and game life (ok... maybe not awesome...). Anyways here it is.

I know this review is a little over do since most people already have a (negative) opinion about this movie but I feel differently and wanted to wait till the smoke cleared to write my review on the matter.

The first time I saw the trailer for John Carter of Mars I must admit I was not all that impressed. I mean it had a skinny looking conan-ish figure, a big desert, and a scene that resemble a lot like the creature arena fight on Star Wars - Epidode 2. I thought to myself "This looks kinda familiar..." but it looked like and action sci-fi movie so I was exited for a new film of that sort. Since I had mixed feelings about the film I decided to wait for the reviews before rushing to the theater on opening weekend. And what I read after the movie opened shocked me...

I mean people were murdering the movie altogether. Actor, story, effects... nothing and no one was getting cleared of the axe shop of the critics. That's when I decided I really had to see it! Eheheh (Nobody is gonna trade over my sci-fi geekness and get away with it!). So I dug a little deeper in the story and found out a couple of interesting pointers.

John Carter of Mars was the creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs for a start. Never heard of him? Well maybe you've heard of another one of his creations... Does the name Tarzan ring any bells?! That's right. This man created one of the most iconic figures of fantasy literature ever and while Tarzan was made into more films, series, books or comics than you can ever hope to read, his outer world counter part never got that much glamour or fame. And that is a real shame!

For the movie part I must admit that Disney - after the Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron - has really learned how to make great action films and, for my part, this was another. The story is good, the cast is adequate and the concept designs (with a little flavor by Star Wars Ryan Church) are simply amazing. I liked the movie. It made me fantasize about what really could go on on Mars. Sure we know it's a desert red wasteland but we also know there are no vampires and that doesn't take away the experience of seing an horror movie.

I liked it and I can't wait for the DVD wich I'm hoping will have lots of extras to the Burroughs book and more on the creation of this nice piece of fantasy sci-fi film.

A four out of five my friends!
