News - The Uncertain Future of Destiny

Hello everyone,

Has most of you now will know if you care anything about gaming, Bungie has left Activision! Yes, the long awaited divorce is finally here and Bungie seems really happy with leaving one of the most hated companies in video games to date. Activision, on the other hand, didn't made any statement about it, being happy or sad to let one of the biggest franchises in video games (I'm talking about Destiny) slip right through their fingers.

A lot of theories came after this split up, the most common (and frankly my own belief) that the Chinese investors of Tencent and NetEase played a huge part in this. Of course, this is all theories for the time being but I believe that who ever wanted Bungie out of Activision had to pay a quite large amount for that to happen. I mean, this is a multi million dollar industry and such deals are not made unless someone is profiting of them, right?!

Having said this, the question in everyone minds is "What's going to happen to Destiny now?!" and a couple of ideas arose from this.

Fist one (and the most believable) is that Destiny 2 will go on, pretty much as it has so far. A new DLC in September 2019, followed by another (hopefully free this time) Annual Pass. I say the Annual Pass should be free as a prof of good faith on Bungie but also cause this would show to players that it was Activision always pushing their "cash for content" routine on the game and not Bungie. It would be nice to see Bungie returning to one full paid DLC per year. I would really love this to happen but I guess we'll have to wait until the announcement later this year to see what's what on that.

The other (most unlikely but a lot cooler) is that Destiny will become a one game franchise again. Meaning, instead of a D1, D2 and a D3 in the future, the game would have major rework and be one single video game experience again. Sure, new content would be added, but basically you'd only need one Destiny to have all the universe combined in there (much like World of Warcraft or other MMO's in that regard). Will that be a thing this year?! Not really betting on it. Will it maybe be a thing coming in D3? A Destiny Legend perhaps?! Maybe.

IMO Bungie needs to up their game cause the competition this year alone is going to be huge. Anthem (Bioware) is almost releasing and it does promise to be a fun experience, although coming with the EA seal of approval is always an uncertainty towards it's future. And we also have The Division 2 (Massive/Ubisoft), a franchise that's already promised free DLC's to the game in the year of launch alone. Not to mention free-to-play Warframe (Digital Extremes) figures keep going up with a new update every three months. All these are concerns to Destiny in therms of gaining new players or simply captivating the ones they have not to leave.

I feel they should first try and be more open to the community, much like The Division "State of the Game" or Warframe  "Dev Stream" or "Prime Time", even Anthem tries to make streams with developers regularly to show how the game is gonna be and how's it going to play. Destiny needs to be more open to it's players and more honest with herself. This "sit on the mountain top" kind of communication really hurt them when it all went south on the D2 launch. They need to hear players feedback and engage more if they have any hope of retaining a big part of the community.

I for once see a lot more content in game and engagement by Digital Extremes and Ubisoft than Bungie and that engagement has paid off with changes in both games that veteran and new players asked for. Is Bungie ready to take this leap? To put herself in the hand of it's players and make changes according? Are they gonna change Destiny to one single huge experience?!

Only time will tell.
