Movie Review - Aquaman
Hello everyone,
Back for another super-hero movie review! This time we travel far deep beneath the ocean to find the lost king of Atlantis, Aquaman. So, after the whole Superman/Batman (2016), Justice League (2017) DC backlash how does the Price of the Seas handles?! Well... It handles pretty well actually!
The movie kinda brings a whole new universe to the silver screen in one great swoop. It's a bit like the first Thor (2011) minus the family heavy drama and has a more "light gag" feel to it. Which is fine with Jason Momoa attitude during the entire movie. We get to see a lot of laughs, a great universe and a very cool story with a powerful strong villain. And, as far as super movies goes, what more could you ask for?!
On the down side of things, I feel the story lacks depth and some of the editing pace is kinda awkward. Also, I feel saturation in a comic movie is a good thing but here it was kinda pushed a bit to far (case in point, Mera's hair).
Now, delicate subject, a lot of people are comparing this movie with Black Panther (2018) and rightfully so: A developing universe, story of a son of a king, the right to rule, super heroes and all... In my opinion both movies work, in different aspects. None of the movies strives to be as epic a tale like Thor and while one touches, ever so slightly, on racial aspects (in the US), the other touches more on the "Save our oceans" theme. One made me laugh more, the other made me think more but all in all, as entertainment goes, they are very much the same.
For all this, the movie works greatly as a great fun action fantasy but is by no means even near the magnitude of Avenger: Infinity war (2018). DC is on the right direction but there's still some milage to go here before it get's to that spot!
A super-hero-fun three out of five.
