DVD Review - Straight Outta Compton

The three names at the top are really all you need to know about this movie.
Ok, before I make my review there's a few things I must say. First, I am not American. I've never been to US and I certainly never been aware of all the hip-hop, rap music history that's been done there since the 80's.

I have heard of some of the characters in the movie cause I know they are music celebrities now. I've heard Tupac, I've heard Snoop, I've heard Eminem, I've heard a bit of Wu-Tang and I've heard House of Pain. That's it! So I was interested in this film cause the reviews on the US were pretty good and I decided to get a more in-depth look at it.

But - to be honest - I was a bit confused by the movie!

At first, I though it was about the beginning and rise up of rappers in the Us during the 80's but it only seems to look at Dr.Dre, Ice Cube and Easy-E (Compton folks - ok fair). So then I thought maybe this was about the white media pressuring against the black communities speaking the truth about violence and police brutality but that wasn't the focus of the film either. Then I was thinking this was about the awareness of HIV virus during the 90's but - again - there's only about 10 seconds about that subject. There was so much focus on too many things going in the movie, that I felt a bit loss on what I was supposed to get out of it!

In the end this, what I got out of this movie was the journey of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Easy-E from nowhere to everywhere, pure and simple! Now is this something worth all the great reviews?! Maybe in the US where they are huge and everyone knows about them, yes! But for the rest of us (outside US) with little knowledge - or care - about such personalities... It doesn't add to much!

A small two outta five!
