Series Review - Chernobil
This is not fiction... |
Unless you're into sci-fi and science the name Chernobyl must mean little to nothing at all.
For those of you that don't know what Chernobyl is (or was) Chernobyl was the single, biggest, most deadly nuclear disaster that ever hit the planet... And I'm not exaggerating here!
I was born in the 70's. Cold war was in full effect and Russia and the US were beginning to not talk to one another. Everyone feared the nuclear holocaust and Hollywood keep remind us of that. We lived if not in fear, at least fearful of a full scale war between the world most powerful superpowers. And then, in 1986, Russia declared that a Nuclear power plant had exploded and there was a risk of contamination to Europe and surrounding countries. Oh joy of joys!
This is the exact pick up point of the series that relates the disaster and one unsung hero in the middle of the entire crisis, Valery Legasov!
The story follows the scientist that had to deal with the nuclear crisis and the investigation that lead to explaining the disaster itself. The pace is very slow but the characters and cast are just superb to watch. The photography is an eery mid 80's unsaturated tone that kinda makes us believe we are seeing an old series and the music and editing are just brilliant.
I cannot stress enough how good Chernobyl is. Only five episodes long but all contained and paced as a 30 minutes documentary of sorts so you are never tired of it. I absolutely loved it and I can only hope they make a second season about Fukushima... the second biggest nuclear disaster to ever hit the planet.
★★★★★
A brilliant five out of five.
