Game Review - Street Fighter X Tekken

One of the most awaited cross overs of the fighting game world hit a big snag with the fans! Shame Capcom, shame...
Hya folks!

Did I ever tell you how much of a Street Fighter (SF) fan I am?! That I played every single character over and over from SFII to Super to Alpha, missed third Strike (no PS2 version back then) and finally to SFIV? No? Well I did and I am!

Since early times as a fifteen year old gamer, Capcom has been a big influence on me. Not only gaming or action genre wise but also art style wise. I've been a huge fan of almost everything they've ever made in the last twenty years. Street Fighter , Darkstalkers, Resident Evil, Sengoku Basara, Onimusha... and when I heard of a Capcom - Namco crossover game I was delighted! After the cross over to 3D I was keen on looking for the battle between the 2D fighting champ SF and his 3D nemesis Tekken (TK).

After Street Fighter IV wich didn't provide you access to the variation costumes except with a DLC (downloadable content) purchase, and the fact that the ending gallery and the concept art weren't available, or even unlocked, left the fans (me included) very disappointed. Still I soldier on! I was under the impression that maybe Capcom would listen to the fans and this time they get it right. Sadly... I was mistaken!

First the good stuff...

Street Fighter X Tekken (SFXT) is one sweet-kick-ass-blow-your-shorts-sky-high of a game! I mean you have all the major characters from both SF and TK and you can slug it out all you want, how many times you need to get your favorite fighter to be the best, most awesome fighting god of all times. You can see great intro artwork and a beautiful CG movie on the end of each team wich leaves you with a great felling of fulfilment every time you get to the end of the game with a new character. Variations on color and customization are also a plus but frankly you won't spend much time there unless you're a hard core online championship player.

Now for the bad stuff...

Art gallery... none! Ending gallery... none! Variation costumes... DLC! But the definitely worse part is 12 characters that appear on the actual characters selection screen, as well as their swap costumes, are only available through DLC. To make it even harder to swallow, rumors appeared that the content was already on the disk when you purchased the game but only unlocked after you got the DLC. This hurt gamers all over the world and even more the Capcom fans.

To put things in perspective, in Europe, you would buy the game first hand by 69,99€ plus a two DLC purchase (for costumes and the "new" players) by 19,99€ each (approximately) getting the price of the full game up to more than 100€!!! And remember, the DLC does not cross over from game to console, so even if you spend that money and re-sell the game, that money is gone and the person who plays the game on another console has to buy the DLC again to get access to it's content  (wich isn't all that fair considering you could lend the game to a friend).

Conclusion...

The game still plays well, so the Capcom quality is assured, but the feeling you got scammed gets in the way of the full enjoyment of the game. As a consequence of this displease by most fans, Namco has already announced their cancelation of the Tekken X Street Fighter game previewed for 2013.

A very sad 3 out of 5.
