Movie Review - Pacific Rim
Alien Invasion? Let me just see what I can do about that! |
This one was a big jump in the dark for me! But lets start at the beginning...
When Guillermo Del Toro announced that he was making a Robots VS Aliens movie there was a big turmoil all over the internet. All the fans wanted to see great anime Mechas portrait decently on the big screen. Sure Transformers had already done it but that was a American franchise and now it was time for the all time favorites Gundam and Evangelion to have a swing at Hollywood and make it big.
Only Guillermo had different plans...
He based his movie on the old Kaiju movies of the 70's and 80's (a fact that was amiss from every text or interview for over a year) and that made anime and japanimation fans angry and revolt all over the world. Not because they didn't love Guillermo but because they felt that the overall design was just a big joke compared to the new, more elaborate and military designs of todays shows.
It poured all kinds of insults and comments and many people really started to think that the movie was gonna tank once it was released. But then the movie came out... and everyone just went silent!
If you are a big, a really big, a huge anime fan, such names like Mazinger or Getter are no stranger to you. No strange cause these were the BIG robot vs alien shows from the 80's and this movie is just that. A great two hours of mechanical and alien mayhem!
I must admit... I was one of the skeptic ones! I mean robots are fine but how was he gonna explain the technology, the advances, the future? Well... He didn't! He just showed what the future was like in the first minutes of the movie and the rest was all just one beat up robot city destruction apocalypse after another. And my friends... Awesome is not enough of a word for it!
A mind blowing, nuclear power, fist to the teeth of a movie that I hope will make way for the next big budget Jaeger VS Kaiju movies.
A (literally) ground breaking movie... 5 out of 5!
