DVD Review - Appleseed Alpha

This fan poster makes more justice to the film than any other!
Hey guys, time for another anime review and today an old flavor with a new twist. But first... Masamune Shirow!

Never heard of him? Well, maybe you've heard of GITS? No... What about Matrix?! Of course of heard of it! If you know "The Matrix", you must know that much of the visuals (and story) of the movie where inspired by a manga called "Ghost In The Shell", made by the one and only Masamuse Shirow.

If you don't know who Shirow is, I must say he's one of the most wide spread mangaka and illustrator from Japan. His creations (GITS, Applessed and Dominion Tank Police) are responsible by two major movies, three CG animations, and (at least) four anime series. So yeah... he get's around!

This is the third animation CG movie done with the universe of "Appleseed" and, while the other two follow the adventures of Deunan and Briareos once they're taken from post apocalyptic desert to the major city hope of Olympus where they become part of a special task force against international terrorism, this one takes place just before they've been rescued and taken to the silver city.

If you know the manga (like I do) you'll see a lot of iconic scenes from the first book and in this one the CG is the most "real" you could ask for nowadays. Most of the times feels like you are watching the latest cinematic by a major game company. To me, it's a great adaptation to the 21st century graphics and realism of the story. Although I would wish for a more climatic ending, I was very impressed and if you are a manga/anime fan... this is not to be missed!

An impressive 4 out of 5.
