DVD Review - Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Asians do it better with poster art also!
Well, well, well...

Finally Hollywood tried to make a live action adaptation of a successful manga to the big screen. But was this adaptation a hit or a miss? In my view... A miss and I tell you why!

The problem with this adaptation is that is too much focused on the 1995 anime movie by Mamoru Oshii.

Since then there's been a ton of movies that tried and mimic the visuals of GTIS on their own. From the top of  my head I can think of "I, Robot" (2004) or the remake of "Total Recall" (2012). So what did they do? They changed the visuals to something else. The movie is a lot more like a oversaturated "Blade Runner" (1982) than anything else and although the sci-fi theme is there it's not even close to the universe the original autor Masamune Shirow created.

On top of that, they changed the back story of main character too much and the whole plot is a down step to the original manga and movie.

To em, they had two choices: Either make a better Oshii version and maintain the story and plot, or, go back to the original GITS manga and try and dive the audience to a new, more elaborate, more military or political totally new story. Instead, they failed both!

I'm not gonna say it's the studio or the directors or even the artists fault since the movie does have quality to it, I'll just say, same as Hollywood took it's time before understanding comics and how to make good movies based on them, they also need more time to do it with mangas. Sad!

A two out of five!
