DVD Review - The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

If only the movie was as simple as this banner

First let me start off by saying that I did enjoy the first The Lego Movie (2014) very much. I liked that they made the movie in the first place. That they really looked like genuine lego pieces and that they moved like stop-motion animation when it was all CG really.

It was funny, creative and entertaining... right up until Will Ferrell appeared! That was when I almost wished I didn't see that movie. Four years on and we have the same universe and heroes back for another adventure, the problem is now there's an (un)clear link between the Lego World and the Human World. And the movie suffers because of this!

Since it's unclear what Legos know about the other world, it's also unclear if they are aware they are in the same world and, as such, it becomes unclear to the audience what's what to either side. Throwout the movie we get a mix between a lego story and a human story and we struggle to see what connects the two. That's not clear in the beginning or the end of the movie. And if it's unclear to us, the adults, it means it's even more unclear to kids.

Ok so that was a problem to me, but besides that... Movie's great!

Same comedy, new characters, cool animations, extraordinary creative ideas both for a movie and for legos. Great pacing, some nonsense, funny gag's and (almost) everything was awesome. A part from a very complicated and hard to follow story I must say, in the end, the movie does what's supposed to do. Show cool lego constructions in a fun way!

A three out of five!
