DVD Review - Space Pirate Captain Harlock
What do you get when you cross pirates, spaceships, guns and the and endangered galaxy... well... this I suppose! |
Time for some new movies! This time not anime, not movie either but a CG animation made in Japan.
So, if you've never heard of Captain Harlock, it was a very popular anime series back in the 70/80's that has since had many re-runs and other short series and films, being the latest one - this one right here - made with Computer Generated technology. The story, has I'm sure who guesses - follow a (Space) Pirate named Harlock that fights for freedom throughout the galaxy.
To start off let me just say that this is a very good animation movie! The CG models are some of the best I've seen and the animation falls not far of some of the best we've seen on other titles like Final Fantasy Advent Children or even some Dreamworks/Pixar movies. It has a solid story, loads of effects and even a good music score to go along with all the coolness.
But, of course, not all is well in the universe and this movie has it's problems. Although the overall story is good, the script goes a bit back and forth and halfway at the end we are left with a sense of not being very sure who to follow. I guess it's maybe the kind the way Japanese creators do things that sometimes makes us westerners not really sure what they were thinking when they were making the cut. But anyway - besides that - the movie is pretty awesome.
I liked it a lot and I encourage you to take a look, if only to see something different from your everyday cutty - bunny - pink - fluffy - kiddy computer animation movie that can get a bit tedious after a while.
A most galactic 4 out of 5.
