DVD Review - Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets

The production value was there... But it wasn't enough!
Luc Besson.

One of my most respected directors! Not because all his works are masterpieces, but because he seems like the only (or at least one of the few) french directors who still tries to make it outside the Hollywood radar. Not always successful but he's already got some industry defining movies under his belt. Is this one such example?!

Unfortunately... No!

City of a Thousand Planets could be called the city of a thousand mistakes. Almost everything in this movie has a flaw or a problem, starting off with the cast. In my view, none of the characters reflects nearly the original comic (or Bande Déssine), they overact and don't even sound believable to begin with and also their lack of chemistry hurts the movie really bad.

I even had a big problem with the costume department. I mean none (and I shit you not, none) of those costumes seem to fit any actor. If this was done same year of Fifth Element (1997) I would understand but now?! The pacing of the movie is all crocked and there isn't any really good treads to follow the overall story. Some other major actors do appear and try to save what is an appauling performance by the cast, all in vain!

I don't know... I felt like they'd already wasted so much money on the CG scenes that they had to go all the way with this movie but, to be true, I expected more from Luc. The only good side of this is that a french scifi comic movie was actually made outside US but that's it!

A one out of five.
